J-town's Gaslight Festival Car Show is Fun for Everyone

Last Sunday, September 16, 2012 my husband Phil and I attended the Gaslight Festival Car Show 2012. We couldn't have asked for better weather! There was a great turnout. 

I was pleasantly surprised at all the people that stopped and talked to us about the car. Maybe I shouldn't have been, since Phil had won his first trophy the day before in the Kentucky Cruizers car show in Carrollton. 

Our entry was a 1962 Ford Fairlane 500. It has a 221 V8 engine, which is the smallest V8 engine Ford ever made. It has 4 doors, not 2 so it is definitely a cruiser, although it will pick up some speeds, trust me! But don't take my word for it...I, the person who hit 3 deers within a year, will not drive it with a ten foot pole. =)

This car show had for the most part very high quality cars and I enjoyed looking at them all. I also enjoyed getting a new T-shirt, pictured above. Pretty cool, huh? My cat just wouldn't let me take a picture without her (see last photo). 

So I will be quiet now and let you enjoy the photos. After all, it is Wordless Wednesday! ;)

Trader Joe’s Is A Must-Visit in Louisville KY!

Last year, one of the agents in our office, Patrice Miles, rallied on Facebook to get Trader Joe’s to come to Louisville, Kentucky. I even liked her Facebook page, Bring Trader Joe's to Louisville KY, having no idea what Trader Joe’s was! I had assumed it was some kind of touristy clothing shop or accessories, until I came across their review page on Yelp.

This past Saturday, I had a chance to visit Trader Joe’s for the first time. Talk about sensory overwhelm! I loved it! If you like to eat healthy food options, you will love this place. The best part about it is all the organic options. Everything, from the meat to the fresh fruit and vegetables, is so fresh and reasonably priced. 

You’ll notice when you enter the store the vast array of organic fruits and vegetables. Their organic vegetables compare in price to Kroger’s non-organic vegetables. For instance, I bought organic baby carrots for $1.69 and fresh chives for $1.79. They have an entire aisle of nuts and dried fruits, just about any kind you would want. You can buy a bunch and make your own trail mix.

Trader Joe’s has a vast selection of cheese. We decided on Havarti (my favorite), grass-fed Swiss, and a round of Laughing Cow cheese was only $2.99. I also bought crackers from there called Multigrain Savory Thins and they are the best crackers I have ever eaten. Cage-free organic brown eggs are a dollar cheaper there than anywhere.

My favorite aisle, by far, was the frozen foods section. I branched out and bought things I’ve never tried before. The Mushroom Risotto was a huge hit. However, the best thing was frozen mango chunks. Here is how I used them: ½ package mango plus 10 fresh cherries, 1 diced kiwi, 6 oz. Pina Colada mix, 6 oz. of Grey Goose vodka, and fill blender to line with ice. It was a delicious frozen drink for one of the hottest days of the year.

Trader Joe’s has a wine shop with a separate entrance next door (as required by Kentucky law). You cannot leave there without getting a bottle of their “Two-buck Chuck” (actual name is “Charles Swan”) which is now $2.99. I am told it is a good wine for the cheaper wines but I have not opened it yet.  

Several of the Yelp reviews mentioned their great fresh pizza dough, so I was disappointed that I didn’t see it in the store. There’s always next time!

We ended up spending just over $200, which will last three people about two to three weeks. Not bad for a bunch of organic, healthy food! I can’t wait to go back to Trader Joe’s in Louisville! It is located off the Watterson on 4600 Shelbyville Road on the same side as the mall and Whole Foods. I will visit there for the first time the next time we go...that sounds like a really fun thing to do in Louisville.

Beautiful Rock Springs subdivision in Louisville KY

You won't find a better place to live than in the Rock Springs subdivision! Conveniently located in the east end of Louisville, the subdivision is located directly across from Murphy Lane off Hwy. 22. This makes it convenient to both Louisville and Oldham County! Access to the I-265 (Gene Snyder) is a short drive. It is also a short drive from shopping at The Summit and Springhurst shopping centers. There is a golf course nearby. For those active home shoppers there are several parks and fitness centers close by. 

Rock Springs has a gorgeous water feature at the subdivision entrance. It is made to simulate a "rock spring" and sets the tone for the beautiful homes inside. Amenities of the subdivision include a large modern playground and a picturesque nature trail. 

Currently (as of June 6, 2012) there are ten homes for sale within Rock Springs ranging in price from $385,900 to $575,000. The bedrooms range from three to five and all homes for sale currently have at least 2.5 baths. Keep in mind that some of these are "virtual listings" meaning they have not been built yet, but the land is available to place your new custom home and this would be the approximate cost.

There have been four homes sold in this subdivision in the past year ranging from $400,000 to $505,000.

Two Great Options for Swimming in Oldham County in 2012!

Oldham County KY has two great options for public swimming. First, there is the John W. Black Aquatic Center, always a family favorite. A lesser known option is Falling Rock Park, which was originally The Quarry owned by Joe Clark, and is for adults only.

The Aquatic Center is a favorite for family fun. Since school let out early this year, they are already open for the season! Admission is $5.00 ages 13 & up, $4.00 ages 3-12, $3.00 ages 60 & up, and free for toddlers 2 & under.

Check out the rules of the pool – there are lots of them. You must be at least 13 years old to enter alone. If the pool is closed because of bad weather, there are no refunds, so use your best judgment as to whether to go in the first place. If the staff hears thunder, they will clear the pool for 20 minutes.

One of the best things about the Aquatic Center is it is located next to a park with playgrounds and a lake. You can bring a picnic lunch, although food is not allowed inside the pool area.

The pool is open Monday through Saturday 12:00pm to 7:00 pm, and Sunday 1:00pm to 6:00pm. It will be open through September 8 of this year. Lots of activities are planned like a 4^th of July Celebration, Mini Triathlon, and Dog Party to go out in style. The Aquatic Center can be reserved for special events and you can also get swimming lessons or attend fitness classes. It is located on 1551 N. Hwy. 393 in Buckner (LaGrange for GPS purposes). What you may or may not know about Oldham County is that it has a swimming area and dive site at the Quarry, officially called Falling Rock Park. It is said that huge crowds of hundreds swarm here to “experience what seems like college break during the summer” according to Ashley Anderson at the Voice-Tribune. She advises to bring cash as they won’t accept anything else, a flotation device, and photo ID to prove that you are at least 18 years of age. You’ll have to sign a waiver at the entrance as the waters are deep.

Falling Rock Park also offers diving for those daring souls who are certified in scuba diving. This costs $15.00 CASH. Apparently there are several sunken “treasures” you can find like boats, a school bus, police car, etc. If you just want to swim that is $8.00. Camping is allowed for $22.00 extra on Saturday nights. Last year they offered bands on Sunday, but you’ll need to call 502-939-5049 for this year’s updated information. Unlike the Aquatic Center, this park will be open until October.

The park is located at 2465 Fendley Mill Road in LaGrange. It is open Monday through Friday 1:00pm to 8:00pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 8:00pm.
